Classic Pizza Dough Recipe
A solid pizza dough recipe is a staple in any Italian home. We share the classic pizza dough recipe we have been following for generations in Eloro District, Sicily.
- 600 ml of warm water
- 1 kg of flour (preferably hard wheat)
- 1 packet of yeast
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 5 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tsps Salt
STEP 1: Place the flour in a large stone bowl and make a well in the center.
STEP 2: Take a cup and a glass of warm water, crumble into the cube of yeast and sugar, stir and allow the mixture to sit for about 5-10 minutes.
STEP 3: Place the water-yeast mixture into the center of the flour the mixture.
STEP 4: In another glass, dissolve the salt in more warm water. Then drizzle the olive oil into the well also.
Note: Keep a bit of flour close incase you need to add more and the remaining warm water, which will integrate in the mixture gradually, until it reaches the desired consistency, which must be soft and elastic.
STEP 5: Stir together the ingredients, and continue to knead until the dough on a clean surface until smooth and soft but firm. Place ball of dough in a large bowl, properly dusted with flour on the bottom.
STEP 6: Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and place it in a warm place and away from drafts. Wait until the dough has doubled in size (about 1 – 1 1/2 hours) and then proceed to the drafting the pizza dough.
